I am not going to lie, I had no idea what Quinoa was. I thought it was a grain. Turns out its seeds. I had not a clue as to where it came from, where it is produced now or any of its origins. Basically, all I had ever heard was that it was a super food and helpful in weight loss. The author did a wonderful job of explaining all of the above and expounded even more on the benefits of adding Quinoa to one’s diet. I also love to cook, so any recipes I can get, from anywhere are fair game. Since I was curious about Quinoa, I chose to purchase this eBook. The recipes are amazing. First of all, I was surprised at the variety of meals you can make for anytime a day with this little seed! Since it recently cooled down, I made the “Yummy Broccoli Quinoa Chowder” for supper last night and it was really good!!

At the core of what you will learn from this book are a problem and a goal. The problem is emotional reactivity. The goal is intimacy. Emotional reactivity will not lead to intimacy.

Emotional reactivity leads to relational patterns, and can be fueled by a number of things. It can be fueled by myths to which you subscribe, beliefs and biases you have about gender, marriage, your spouse or yourself, and even fueled by your upbringing and the family dynamics in which you were raised.

This book takes readers step-by-step through the problems, with real-life examples given, and strategies for change.

Relational patterns have to do with the predictable nature of arguments in your marriage. Different arguments may result in different patterns, but overall there are typically predictable patterns that play out on a regular basis between spouses, fueled by emotional reactivity. One example of a relational pattern is the pursuer/distancer pattern, in which one spouse consistently pursues the other spouse to address a topic, and this results in the distancing partner to distance even further. The pattern quickly develops, with the pursuer frustrated by the distance, and pursuing more strongly, which serves to push the distancing partner further away. Some other examples of relational patterns are over/underfunctioning, conflict/avoidant and dominant/submissive. Each of these, and others, are described in the book to help readers spot the patterns they may be stuck in.

One of the steps toward change is recognizing your relational patterns, and working toward recognizing them and altering the pattern, compared to continuing to be emotionally reactive which is what led to the patterns in the first place. Arguments and the patterns they follow take two people, and it only takes one person to change the pattern; changing the pattern eventually will change the relationship.

One influence to the emotional reactivity and relational patterns between a couple are myths that a spouse may believe. There are ten myths of marriage described early in this book. The first myth about marriage is: Changing a Relationship Requires Two People. One of the messages of this book is that it doesn’t take two people; one spouse can take steps to change the relationship without the direct cooperation of his partner. Notice, this is about changing the relationship, not changing the partner. Some other myths include Love Is a Feeling and My Ideal Soul Mate Is Out There. Holding on to the beliefs of any of the ten myths about marriage in this book can be a roadblock to lasting change. Each myth is described, and an example is given of a couple where at least one spouse believes the myth and how this belief affects the relationship.

Belief systems can become another large part of communication problems, especially where there is faulty thinking. Some examples of errors in thinking are jumping to catastrophic conclusions based on limited data, all-or-nothing thinking, tunnel vision, and the expectation that your spouse can read your mind, or should be able to. It’s easy to see why these types of thinking errors can damage a relationship. This book walks readers through exploring their own errors in thinking, and then even deeper into understanding your personal belief systems when it comes to gender, marriage, your spouse, and yourself.

Being a workbook, there are plenty of questions to answer, and the questions you’re asked to answer will take some real thought and consideration. By writing down and then thoughtfully considering some of your beliefs about other people or groups of people, hopefully it will help you consider the fact that your spouse may not fit the mold you automatically and subconsciously assume. For example, if you believe all men are controlling, you’ll see your husband through that lens, and his actions will feel far more controlling than they are. It turns into a vicious cycle. By recognizing the beliefs you have about gender differences, marriage, your spouse and yourself, you can take a step back and try to view the situation more objectively, and not through those possibly negative views.

Another common problem with belief systems is that they reinforce each other. For example: if you believe that your spouse is always blaming problems on you, then a simple question such as “Where is the checkbook?” will result in the assumption that you’re being blamed for misplacing it. The skill to learn here is being able to take a step back and ask yourself, “Am I really being blamed for this, or is this just a simple, direct question which needs answering?” In other words, “Am I jumping to conclusions based on previously formed beliefs about gender/my spouse/myself/marriage, or does this situation really not reflect those beliefs if looked at objectively?”

The information in this book is found in a lot of books, but it is organized well. The book lives up to its name as a “portable problem solver”, a kind of relationships for dummies with all the basics in small bite size chunks. I do not know if you could have a stunning and wonderful relationship just by reading this book. I have my doubts about this, but I think that a person would find some useful and helpful vignettes worth reading, and it just might help solve a few key issues and maybe help a good relationship stay on track.
